There are seventeen weight divisions. Ranging from Minimum weight (105 lb/ 47.6kg) to three flyweight classes, light flyweight, flyweight and super flyweight. The next section is bantamweight and super bantamweight followed by featherweight and super featherweight. Lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight are next followed by light middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight starting at 168 lb (76.2kg). Light heavyweight and cruiserweight take us up to heavyweight at 200+ lb (90.7kg).
There are numerous boxing organizations and federations around the world but four are recognized as the major bodies. The oldest is the World Boxing Association (WBA) which started life as the National Boxing Association in 1921. The World Boxing Council (WBC) has been responsible for many of today’s safety features and originated in Mexico in 1963. The IBF or International Boxing Federation splintered from the WBA in 1976 and finally the WBO or World Boxing Organization was founded in 1988 in Puerto Rico.
Wladimir Klitschko had a 21-year career as a heavyweight boxer and holds the record for the longest combined world championship reign at 4,382 days or 12 years. In that time he made 14 consecutive successful defenses and defeated a record 23 opponents. His record stands at 69 fights with 64 wins and 5 losses including 53 KOs.
Puerto Rican boxer Wilfred Benitez turned pro at 15 and two years later at 17 years old he defeated 30-year-old Light Welterweight champion Antonio Cervantes after a 15-round split decision. He went on to defend the title successfully three times before changing to welterweight and in 1979 claimed the WBC title. Next he moved up to Super Welterweight and he became the youngest three-weight world champion at age 22.
