  • The first F1 season to feature a Drivers’ Championship was held in 1950 and was won by Italian Giuseppe Farina. There were 6 European Grand Prix races and the Indianapolis 500 was featured though the European drivers mostly did not take part in it. Farina won the British Grand Prix from pole at Silverstone while his main rival Juan Manuel Fangio took the second race at Monaco. Both drivers passed on the third race in Indianapolis and Farina took the Swiss Grand Prix at Bremgarten. Fangio took the next two in Belgium and France and Farina took the final Italian Grand Prix meaning they were tied on three wins each. Farina won the Championship with 30 points to Fangio’s 27 having finished 4th in Belgium.
  • The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium saw its first race in 1922 and over the next few years it became notorious both for its speed and the number of fatalities. Safety did not significantly improve until the 1980s following boycotts and race cancellations due to safety concerns.Changes to the circuit reduced its length and speed and added several necessary safety features. It remains the longest Formula One track, however, at just over 7 km.
  • Verstappen became the youngest ever F1 driver at just 17 years 166 days by driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso at the Australian GP in 2015, although he didn’t finish that race due to engine failure. In the next race in Malaysia he earned his first Championship points by finishing 7th. In 2016 he moved to Red Bull and in his very first race with them he won the Spanish Grand Prix.
